What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog feels like your brain is running through mud—it’s harder to think clearly, focus, or even find the right words in conversations. You might feel forgetful, struggle to concentrate, or take longer to process information. It’s not a medical term but a way to describe mental cloudiness that can happen after being sick, not getting enough sleep, or even when you’re stressed. Think of it like your mind hitting the “snooze” button when you need it to be fully awake.

Why does brain fog happen?

Brain fog happens when your brain is trying to juggle too much information at once, kind of like a computer with too many tabs open—it slows down or freezes. Your brain has a limit on how much it can handle at a time, and when that limit is reached, it feels like everything is harder: remembering things, focusing, or even making simple decisions. This happens when you’re overwhelmed with new information or distracted by other things, causing mental fatigue and that “foggy” feeling.

Symptoms of Brain Fog

Fine Motor Strength: Brain fog can make your hands feel clumsy, leading to difficulty with tasks requiring precision, like writing or buttoning a shirt.

Memory Impairment: It’s harder to recall recent events, conversations, or where you put things.

Word-Finding Difficulty: You might struggle to find the right word during conversations, leading to pauses or incorrect substitutions.

Reduced Concentration: Staying focused on a task feels challenging, and your mind might wander easily.

Decision-Making Challenges: Simple decisions can feel overwhelming, and processing choices takes longer.

Mental Fatigue: Thinking or problem-solving feels exhausting, even for tasks that were once easy.

Documentation and Activity Rationale

The patient engaged in cognitive-motor dual tasking techniques. leveraging motor-based practices  for inter-hemishpheric communication to elicit neuronal excitation overflow into executive functioning and increased functional independence. The patient engaged in a task requiring auditory memory and alternating memory via the memorization of 5/5 occupation-specifc  vocabulary words  in order to practice writing during the completion of the 5 point obstacle course with hurdles and unstable surfaces. The patient recalled 5/5 vocabulary words with good wrist extension during writing task. Written text continues to display ascending orientation demonstrating persisting visual spacial deficits.

The patient engaged in a dual-tasking activity requiring the ability to recruit executive functioning components while alternating between movement-based performance. This task utilized the stroop color and word test (SCWT) to maximize the ability to inhibit cognitive interference when the processing of a specific stimulus feature impedes the simultaneous processing of a second stimulus attribute. The movement-based component required the ability for the patient to clear 5/5 hurdles approximately 8″ in height to improve reaction time, visual-perceptual functions, reaction time, eye-foot coordination, neuromuscular communication, and the ability to process sensory-motor stimuli s/p executive-function based activity in order to elicit neuronal excitation and maintain cognitive reserve.

Documentation and Activity Rationale

The patient engaged in a dual-tasking obstacle course designed with alternating (3) hurdles with 6″ rise 2″ run and (3) aerobic steps 8″ rise by 13″ run to simulate various obstacles required during continuous community mobility. The patient was given 2-4 instructions varying between the difficulty of single-step and multi-step commands in order to assess and enhance working memory, topographical orientation, selective attention, sustained attention, and emotional regulation under pressure.

The task required the patient to receive a specified number or addition/subtraction calculations and ambulate the amount given. This activity is purposed to focus on intentional movements, logical reasoning, and working memory. The patient demonstrated no evidence of LOB or instability. She required between 2-3 repetitions of each math calculation given.
